The Block Sky High rocked by tragedy with contestant losing mother to breast cancer

IT was one of the most emotional episodes on reality TV last night, with a contestant on The Block Sky High losing her mother to cancer.

Bec, who is competing on Nine's hit renovation show alongside husband George, lost her mother Rosa Martino to breast cancer.

The 27-year-old's mum had been battling breast cancer for five years and died on Monday.

"Even though we knew it was coming cause I'd spoken to Bec, it was still a bit of a shock. But Bec seems to be handling it well", contestant Madi commented in last night's episode.

"Nights like this it makes you miss your family even more. Family is so important and The Block is so insignificant compared to what is important in life", twins, Alisa and Lysandra said.

"I don't know what to do, I don't know what to say to her you know, what words to comfort her with" a devastated George said when he arrived on set to collect some of their belongings.

The heartbreaking news comes during Master Bedroom Week when host Scotty Cam called "tools down" so that contestants could return to their home states to be with their families.

Bec and George, from Melbourne, weren't present at the elimination round on Sunday night as they were at the hospital with Rosa.

Viewers were introduced to Rosa during a family barbecue in the first episode of Sky High.

"She was really, really excited when we were selected for The Block because she actually encouraged us to audition," she told ninemsn.

"She was over the moon when we won that first room. You know, it was just confirmation for her. She was our biggest fan."

The devastating experience has led Bec to start working with The Block and the National Breast Cancer Foundation to raise much-needed funds for cancer in Rosa's memory.

"I don't want anyone else to go through what I've gone through, what George has now gone through twice because he lost his mother the same way", she added.
